About Amritsar
The city of pure devotion, Amritsar is the sanctified city dwelling around the Harmandir Sahib, a center of Sikhism, more popularly known as Golden Temple. Founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the city depicts the history, heritage and legends associated with the religion in the best possible way. There are many museums, gardens, tombs and borderlines taking a traveller back to the times in Amritsar.
Golden Temple
The almighty God resides in Golden Temple, an epitome shrine devoted to Sikhism. The holy site came into prominence when fourth guru of Sikhism, Guru Ram Das, excavated a tank of pure nectar of immortality, on which the city was named Amritsar. The splendid edifice of Golden Temple was constructed in the middle of this tank, which subsequently became a supreme Sikh Pilgrimage destination.
Akal Takht, The Throne of the Timeless One or Seat of God also belongs to Harmandir Sahib Gurudwara. A small Sikh museum and a Langar hall or a community kitchen where food is made for all pilgrims & served together also is a part of Golden Temple complex. Plated with more that 110 kgs of gold, this Gurudwara epitomises the religion’s belief of Purity in devotion attracting millions of pilgrims every year.
Jallianwala Bagh:
Visiting the park at Jallianwala brings to a visitor the memories of a ghastly encounter by General Dyer where 2000 Indians were shot during a peaceful meeting on April 13, 1919. The memorial of Jallianwala Bagh contains a Park and a Martyr gallery. The Bullet marks on the wall of park and the well into which hundreds jumped to escape the bullets serve as a testimony of the massacre.
Ram Bagh:
Ram Bagh is the best way to come closer to the rich heritage of Punjabi history. Earlier a summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Lion of Punjab, present day Ram Bagh is a historical museum safeguarding weapons, gallery of paintings and manuscripts dating back to Mughal era.
Wagah Border
Belonging to the historical Grand Trunk Road, Wagah Border is the only road border crossing shared by India and Pakistan. The best time to visit this border is in the evening during the retreat ceremony where both the countries lower their flags and Troops put on a show in their uniforms with their colorful turbans.
