Churches of Goa - The Churches of Goa form the better part of its heritage. The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is one of the prominent churches of Goa, established by Portuguese in its capital, Panaji. The construction of Basilica of Bom Jesus was started in 1594 and consecrated in 1605. The largest church of Goa, Se Cathedral was constructed to glorify the victory of Portuguese under Afonso de Albuquerque over Goa. Shravanabelagola is another great architectural feat featuring 57 ft monolithic statue of Bahubali Gomateshwara, a Jain saint. It is the world’s largest monolithic stone statue. Every twelve years, a grand ceremony called Mastakabhisheka takes place where thousands of devotees gather and worship the statue with milk, ghee, curd, red kumkum, saffron and gold coins. The next Mahamastakabhisheka will be held in 2018.
